Recently seen in Leeds: four birches, recently planted by a busy junction next to a brownfield development. Whilst birches are often used in this situation, what stood out was the planting detail.
Here, they are seen in massive 1.5 x 1.5 x 1.2m raised frames with watering bags, using the same eggshell HDPE used in airpots as a sleeve to contain the soil. Everyone from Kew to Coles are using airpots for containers systems now because they really do work, but it does seem like extreme measures in this instance. It’ll be interesting to see if these trees live longer than the twelve year average for most new street trees.
